Syllable division is a strategy for breaking down longer words to help with decoding.  ‘Syllable Division’ starts with a consideration of short and long vowels and open and closed syllables, before setting out each of the five ways of dividing words: ‘rabbit’ words, ‘tiger’ words, ‘lemon’ words, ‘apple words and ‘diamond’ words.  By combining these aspects of syllable division, it can provide a convenient prompt for learners to refer to once the rules have been taught in detail.
