Elklan have developed a range of successful, accredited courses for practitioners supporting learners with speech, language and communication needs. These are highly practical training courses designed to equip practitioners with approaches and strategies to maximise speech, language and communication skills of ALL learners; in particular those with speech, language and communication needs and/or English as an Additional Language.
This course is relevant to SENCO’s, teachers, teaching assistants and speech and language therapy assistants working with primary aged learners.
The course consists of 10 weekly teaching sessions lasting two hours starting on 9 January 2017.
The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners, promote information exchange and mutual support.
“Language Builders” is provided and forms the core reading material for the course. It clearly follows the content of the teaching sessions and provides additional practical advice and ideas.
Learners complete e-portfolio tasks to apply and evaluate the specific strategies and approaches covered in each teaching session within their own work context. This is set up prior to the course on registration with Elklan.
Learners are guided towards completion of their e-portfolio through a clear and detailed marking system which allows for a combination of written and verbal feedback.
Elklan courses are accredited through Ascentis. It is possible to study at level 3 or level 2.
At level 2 you are asked to list, plan, explain and describe.
Level 3 requires a more in depth level of study. At level 3 you are asked to plan, implement, describe, carefully justify and evaluate.
Both levels are on the QCF (Qualification Curriculum Framework) and so represent nationally recognised qualifications. Successful submission of a portfolio of evidence leads to an Ascentis Level 3 or Level 2 Award in Knowledge and Practice to Support the Communication Skills of 5-11’s equivalent to 9 credits.
It is possible to move from level 3 to level 2 at any time without having to repeat assignments.
Learners are required to attend all teaching sessions and to complete an e-portfolio at level 2 or 3. Portfolios are marked by the Elklan independent tutor and then externally verified by Elklan and Ascentis. It is highly recommended that learners submit completed portfolios by the end of the course. Portfolios must be successfully completed within one year of the course start date to meet accreditation requirements.
Students should expect to invest 90 hours to complete the course at either level 2 or 3. Each week students will need to spend: 2 hours studying at the Centre with the course tutor, 1 hour writing up the e-portfolio, approximately 4 hours planning and carrying out practical tasks for the portfolio, reading and discussing and an additional 2 hours observing and supporting the speech, language and communication skills of learners with and without difficulties.
The fee for each course is £500. This includes a copy of “Language Builders” and the accreditation fee.
