Elklan Speech and Language Support for 5-11s

Elklan have developed a range of successful, accredited courses for practitioners supporting learners with speech, language and communication needs.   These are highly practical training courses designed to equip practitioners with approaches and strategies to maximise speech, language and communication skills of ALL learners; in particular those with speech, language and communication needs and/or English as an Additional Language.

This course is relevant to SENCO’s, teachers, teaching assistants and speech and language therapy assistants working with primary aged learners.

Course Structure

The course consists of 10 weekly teaching sessions each of two hours starting 8 January 2018.   Sessions use interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners, promote information exchange and mutual support.

“Language Builders” forms the core reading material for the course and closely follows the content of the teaching sessions.   Learners additionally complete an e-portfolio based on practical application of their learning within their own work context.

Learners are guided towards completion of an e-portfolio through a clear and detailed marking system which allows for a combination of written and verbal feedback.   Portfolios are marked by the course tutor and, on completion, are externally verified by Elklan and Ascentis.

Elklan courses are accredited through Ascentis.   Successful submission of a completed portfolio leads to an Ascentis Level 2 or Level 3 Award in Knowledge and Practice to Support the Communication Skills of 5-11’s equivalent to 9 credits. Both levels are on the QCF (Qualification Curriculum Framework) and so represent nationally recognised qualifications.

Portfolios must be successfully completed within one year of the course start date to meet accreditation requirements.
