The purpose of this book is to give detailed practical suggestions to teachers so that their pupils remember more effectively what they have been taught.  In order to achieve this, a number of other aims have to be realised:

  1. We have to establish a contemporary understanding of human memory and show how a research-based model of the structure of memory comes alive in the everyday remembering and forgetting of both ourselves and our pupils.
  2. We need also to address attitudes and assumptions about memory and learning that are prevalent within current educational practice.
  3. We need to show, at every age and stage, how we can help pupils to become more aware of their own remembering by the use of appropriate strategies.
